Description of the limitation and why it is relevant to address

As a developer it would be useful if the MapLegend were capable of showing symbols (such as can be displayed on GeoJsonViews or MapViews) to reference elements on the map more specifically. I.e. to change the shape of the coloured rectangle which can currently only be customised by changing its colour. This would allow more effective visualisation of multiple map elements and an easier user experience.

Submitter proposed design (optional)

Allow for symbol to be passed for each legend row in the MapLegend constructor. Use same names and symbols as for MapPoint icons to ensure items shown on the map can be referenced in the Legend.

In addition it would also be nice to specify something like "line", "polygon". So we can show the coloured rectangle as a line when we know it’s only show as lines on the map.

I think this feature request has some similarity to this one about custom MapIcons. It would be amazing if, similar to using a picture in the parametrization, we could use svg or png files as icons.
